Robert L. Craig School, Moonachie

Free Program Serving grades 4th - 8th

Before School – 7:15am-8:15am | After School – 3:15pm – 6:15pm
The Meadowlands Area YMCA will be providing FREE an Before and After Care program that is rich is academic remediation and Enrichment to the students at the Robert L. Craig School in Moonachie. This 21st Century program will provide a strong remediation program that addresses specific learning gaps and skills identified by classroom teachers and NJASK tests. Our program now includes a nutritious afterschool meal and healthy snack through the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Certified teachers in mathematics and language arts will conduct one-on-one tutoring, homework help and small-group instruction. In addition, the program will provide Study Island, Read 180, Skill Building Challenge activities and a wide variety of enrichment activities, such as Drama Club, Musical Theater, Martial Arts and Behavioral Strategies including (Bullying Intervention Strategies that work), Mad Science, Hobby Quest, Robotics, Swim Lessons and Educational Field Trips.

The United Theme: The Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) theme will support the Moonachie School by initiating and incorporating STEAM activities to increase student engagement. The Meadowlands YMCA before care, afterschool and summer program will continue to build upon existing successful partnerships.

Liberty Science Center’s Traveling Science Programs will bring memorable science programs directly to Moonachie students. All are designed to engage, excite and educate students while covering a wide range of scientific topics, which facilitate the development of learning and innovative skills.

The STEAM theme will provide opportunities for students to learn about what scientists, engineers, and mathematicians do, and to experience tasks they perform, the methods they employ, and how they assess their effectiveness. Other STEAM activities will include: the Science Discovery, Lego Robotics, and science-focused field trips to the Franklin Institute, Meadowlands Environmental Center, and The New York Aquarium.

Youth Development and Other Activities: Students will participate in youth development and community-enrichment activities, including Generation Us, which helps children experience the feeling of self-worth by participating in projects involving giving back, helping others, making a difference and being a role model in their community. They will also choose from a range of nutrition, health and fitness including Horizon Healthy U, swimming, tennis, golf, basketball, and dance. All families will receive a Free Family Swim Membership.

SUMMER PROGRAM

The summer program will provide students a safe, positive, interesting summer experience during which they will have swimming lessons, participate in the “Making Summer’s Count” program which has the potential to help children and youth improve their academics and other outcomes. This is especially true for children who need additional time to master academic content.

Collaborations, Partnerships, and Stakeholders: The partnership between the Meadowlands Area YMCA and the Moonachie Board of Education will make it possible to provide year-round, high-quality programming for Moonachie students.

The Meadowlands Area YMCA afterschool and summer programs serve a critical purpose: they keep students safe while they support their academic and social development by addressing learning gaps and negative influences in the community; especially those that have been affected by Superstorm Sandy.
The Meadowlands YMCA will be opened at 11AM today 11/15 and the Pool will open at 1PM.
The Meadowlands YMCA Pool will be closed from August 26th - September 3rd for Annual Maintenance.
